This morning at the Diaconate Ordination of Rev. Mon Celestial and Rev. Jorge Farias, Bishop Kicanas, as always, powerfully delivered a homily worth quoting. He said that “we may not know the details about the lives of the seven reputable men chosen to serve as deacons in the early church but they definitely were deeply spiritual and prudent people.” These two essential qualities in ministry which affect every aspect of parish life are exactly the things I learned early on. They do not happen in an instant. You gain it, by discipline (rise and fall), overtime. Finally, “the pre-eminence of service” in the church which goes with the promise of celibacy must be a top priority. True. We don’t own our time. In fact, a parishioner asked about my plans for Christmas, I said, I have no life. Maybe, the day after, I can unwind. Amen.
