The Preparation

Though the Mass begins with the Entrance Chant, what happens on the way to the church that is, the preparation stage is crucial to the celebration: the choice, the time, the dress, including our personal baggage shape our entire disposition. Someone shared to me that it usually takes her two hours to prepare for Mass. Great! Tell me what you do then…beauty rest…she said. Whatever! For a Catholic whose understanding of the Mass has mostly been an obligation to fulfill, going to church on Sunday may have been  a huge burden. I’ve observed that many Catholics think that the only thing necessary to practice Faith is attendance on Sunday which of course defeats the purpose of constant renewal.

The vestibule of St. James had a facelift, not a lot but looks better than it was…

As you enter the church’s main door, there’s a sign:

YOU ARE ENTERING A SACRED PLACE…

PLEASE…

OBSERVE REVERENT SILENCE,

SHUT OFF YOUR CELLPHONES,

DON’T BRING FOOD/DRINKS INSIDE

and dress appropriately…italics next week…

The presentation to the wider St. James community kicked off last Sunday in all English Masses with a video highlighting the changes and put kids to sleep. It will touch every part of the Mass from the Entrance to the Recessional replete with a detailed Catechesis.  This isn’t simply about new words and responses. It’s about leading people into worship and transcendence and what we do after. Amen.
