It’s not about the money…

After the announcement at the 5pm Vigil Mass, I knew it wasn’t appropriate (hesitate to say this) but I almost had to make a cover of Jessie’ price tag, too bad. It had nothing to do with the readings nor with the sermon preached. I just felt impelled to explain something about offertory as charitably as I can borrowing the lyrics…it’s not about the money, money, money…although it’s needed for parish ministry…I mentioned that when the collection plate is passed, it’s alright if we have nothing to offer for the moment. I would love to beat the numbers and increase the revenue every weekend and yet it’s not so much about that. Instead, I suggested if the basket stops at you, don’t get embarrassed, don’t frown, graciously put your hands on it for as long as you don’t take something out, symbolic of our joyful participation and sacrificial offering in the celebration. Amen.
