Katy Perry’s Teenage Dream

As someone working closely with teenagers, a distinct stage characterized mostly by an endless sense of curiosity in just about anything, identity exploration, greater susceptibility to media influences and high level of dependence on peer pressure, Katy Perry’s new song, not to mention elmo and cleavage which angered many parents, is alarmingly trend setting. There’s nothing new under the sun about teenage sex, whether in Catholic or Public Schools. It’s rampant and well celebrated in parties and prom nights. For those whose morality is anything goes, virginity is old-fashioned and obviously, makes no sense but for someone who takes to heart lofty moral ideals, it’s priceless and worth preserving until Marriage. With a pile of unfinished paper work sitting on my desk, I shouldn’t have given it a damn but since my job includes protecting ‘my kids’, I bring it up. Am I too conservative? Nope. It’s nothing of that sort. In matters of morality, I cannot remain neutral.

I don’t understand the story behind it but the video and lyrics are very telling…
“Let’s go all the way tonight
           no regrets??? just love…”
“We drove to Cali and got drunk on the beach
Got a motel and built a floor out of sheets…”
Well, I’m just very concerned with how it’s currently affecting Catholic teenagers…
